Field Sound 5

This was the end of my walk and I thought Oakland would be a nice street to end it on. This homeless guy had a bell, like the Salvation Army does, and he was ringing it outside of Knuckleheads on Oakland asking people for money and I thought it was hilarious so i had to get the bell of him recorded because the sound of the ringing bells is just as plesant as any other sound I heard on the walk and it kind of plays out how wierd walking around Milwaukee for four hours can really be.

I stopped by my friends house on the way back from the walk and he was snow shoveling. I thought the shovel going into the snow was a great crisp sound and put the microphone very close to the shovel as he was shoveling. It turned out to be a very relaxing and soothing sound for shoveling. Even though shoveling is not very fun the sound it makes with the snow is pleasant to listen to.

This sound was taken under the Union in the parking garage. It was a small bus that was having luggage loaded onto it. When I was watching and recording the luggage being loaded onto the bus it didn't seem like it would turn out as some of my favorite sounds that were recorded from the walk. The buzzing in the background, that you don't normally hear when your walking through the garage, has an unstable sound to it. The buzzing keeps fluctuating and changing, but stays a constant buzz at the same time. Then after a few seconds of hearing the buzz sound there are a series of crashes and bangs that echo through the garage and it makes a great sound. And while all of this is going on you can hear very distant voices of people talking behind the buzzing sound in the garage.

The wind chimes were a great sound to get a close up of with the microphone. Even though it was not a windy day when I went on my walk, I physically had to flutter the wind chimes with my hand to create the un-natural sound that you get when you listen to the .mp3. You can clearly tell that the wind was not moving the chimes but something un-natural was moving the wind chimes creating a different sound than you would normally hear. It's not as subtle sounding as wind blowing the chimes, it's more jagged and rough sounding.

As I was walking there was many things I recorded but I wanted to stay away from wildlife because I figured it would be cliche and not very interesting but the sound of the two dogs I heard, at the time, facinated me because of the almost call and response between the two dogs and rythem of their barks. I wanted to get closer to these dogs but I thought the sound would be better light and distant, kind of a background sound because a dogs bark is such a harsh sound.

Drift Strategy

When I first walked out of my house onto the sidewalk I wanted every sound that I got to be a randomly regular sound but also be able to listen past "regular sound" and turn it into something that is beyond the sound. When I started my walk, I closed my eyes, spun around three times and opened them to start off which direction I was to go in. Every time I needed to change direction I would close my eyes and spin a few times to get a random direction and see what I could find on the way.
